Machine Shops and Prototyping Labs

Machine shops and prototyping labs house equipment for the development of physical and electrical prototypes, with capabilities ranging from wood & hand tools to CNC and 3D-printed components. Each facility serves specific users and types of work, and can only be accessed after undergoing training and agreeing to comply to user policies.

Facilities

3D Printing and Rapid Prototyping Lab

The 3D Printing and Rapid Prototyping Lab is a teaching lab within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, located in the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center. This lab provides low to high-end 3D printing services and reverse engineering tools, for rapid production of prototypes.

Northwestern University Laser and Electronics Design Core Facility

The Northwestern University Laser and Electronics Design core facility (NU-LED) exists to give Northwestern researchers a competitive edge in the fields of electronics and optical engineering when compared to research institutions that do not provide such support. NU-LED offers professional design, fabrication, integration, and testing/repair services in these fields. NU-LED also maintains a collection of professional quality electrical test instruments which is available for short term rent. Our staff provides educational assistance to students, postdocs, and faculty through both informal consultation and classes. We assist groups with developing, monitoring, and troubleshooting to quickly diagnose any issues with digital, analog, and laser based systems.

Segal Prototyping & Fabrication Lab

The Segal Prototyping & Fabrication Lab is located in the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center. This lab houses a wide array of machine shop fabrication equipment for both low and high-end needs and offers extensive training and project help for lab users.

The Garage

The Garage is a cross-disciplinary co-working space located on the North Evanston campus, available to the Northwestern startup community. The Garage includes a user-accessible prototyping area for startups with physical fabrication needs.

Research Shop

Located in the Technological Institute, the Research Shop consists of three elements for providing services to the Research community:

Mechatronics Lab

The Mechatronics Lab is a teaching lab within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, located in the Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center. This lab provides components and fabrication equipment for electronics prototyping, advice, and training, as well as entry-level 3D printing.

Corner Makery

The Corner Makery is a place for discovery, exploration, and play at the Segal Design Institute. The Corner Makery grants open access to maker-space equipment and a community of makers.
